I don't know what happened last night.
I was Observing from my location in Irondequoit starting with the moon early and then going on to Jupiter to see the moon events.
Both are fairly low in my southern sky and half buried in the city glow, not to mention the horizon haze. This does not make for very good viewing of surface details on the moon, much less on Jupiter.!
I slowly increased power while looking at the moon, hoping I would have a decent image to maybe 100X.
Imagine my surprise when I could not get the image to break up, no matter how hard I tried !!! (I was using my Orion 120mm F/8.3 Refractor)
When switching to jupiter, the same thing held true.
I finally decided to see just how far I could push this and went to my 6mm eyepiece with the 2.5X Powermate giving me in effect a 2.4mm ocular at 417X and still the image would not break up!!!. Surface detail on Jupiter was still very clearly visible.
It was not until I resorted to the 5X barlow and got 833X that the image went to pieces!!
The successful observation at 417X blew the conventional wisdom of 50 to 60X per inch of aperture all to hell, again proving that good quality small instruments under ideal condition can greatly exceed their normal parameters.
It is supposed to be clear again tonight, I wonder if this condition could occur again so soon. (Of course I am not going to hold my breath)

Adolph

Thanks for the report, Adolph. It's amazing how far you can push a scope when the seeing allows. Shocked This whole week looks like good weather. Too bad the moon will be nearing full disk. No terminator to view and no imaging. Wink I might break out the grab and go tonight for a few peeks. See how far I can push the 105mm F5.9.

This happened to me once maybe three-four years ago. No mater how far I pushed it the image just got better and better on Jupiter and Saturn so I went as far as I could and probably could have gone farther.

If I remember right;
8" SCT
3x + 2x (5x) barlow's
9mm ep
