With Easter fast approaching, I thought that some of you might find this interesting.
Easter is one of our oldest festivals and pre-dates Christianity by several centuries. Since it was the most important spring festival for the germanic tribes, the church appropriated it for it's own use. ( A very common practice )
According to the myths of the Angles and Saxons (yep, the ones that later went to England ), The goddess "Eostre" created the Hare from a bird. In remembrance of this, she endowed the Hare with the ability to run as fast as a bird could fly. She also allowed him to lay eggs once a year. Thus, once a year the Easter Bunny brings us our Easter Eggs. (The word Easter is a derivation of the goddess' name.
To atone for his loss, the Goddess placed his picture in the sky. It is the constellation Lupus, the Hare, very near the constellation of Orion, the hunter who can never catch him.
The word "Estrus" is also a derivation of the godess' name which reminds us of spring with it's promise of fertility, in humans.
