During February and March I had cataract surgery on both eyes, where the original Lenses were replaced.
I mentioned to the surgeon that I was an Amateur Astronomer just to see if he could do anything special for me.
Good thing I did !!!
You see, there are several types of lenses he can select to replace the old ones.
The most common replacements are lenses that correct for both far- and nearsightedness and unless you say something, that's what your surgeon will use as a matter of course.
The problem is that these lenses will loose about 30% of the incoming light. This is normally not noticed by most people, since cataracts dim your vision anyway.
He suggested that the lenses for close-up vision are the most transparent and that is what he put in. But even with the close up lenses, my distant vision has also improved considerably to where I need only a very weak prescription for driving etc.
A couple of days ago I had the first chance to use my new eyes at the Telescope. WHAT A DIFFERENCE !!!!!!!!!!
Now I can't wait for some clear nights to really put them to the test. !!

Mine got worse every year also, to the point where I would have been legally blind in a few more years.
I did not realize how bad my eyesight had become, because the deterioration takes place slowly over a long period of time.
Shortly after the operation, I kept telling my doctor that everything looked like an overexposed movie !! My eyesight had become so dim over time that the corrected vision seemed unnaturally bright by comparison..
BTW, the operation is completely painless.!! I was fully awake throughout the whole procedure. Very interesting !!

Adolph, great idea! If we would all consider doing that, could we get a group rate? Really, great news and hope to see you down at Ionia testing them out! _________________ bmcg |

Something that I believe I have to look forward to. My Dad had them , his mom had them, one of his brothers and I believe sister as well. Assuming heredity, I very well might end up the same way. Dad's surgery was just a few weeks ago which is when I learned what "half" his problem was. The other half he's just learned is macular degeneration. Again something I might be looking at in the future. However, since I know about these now, I can have my eyes checked for both problems regularly and catch everything early where it'll do the most good _________________ Michael A. Barlow
